Thomas Brawner did not set out to run a childcare business. He earned a marketing degree, worked in insurance, and only entered childcare through his wife’s career. When he started a center from the ground up, he took on every role at once: operator, leader, problem solver, decision maker. He had high standards for quality but no clear blueprint for scaling, and he kept hitting the same walls. He filled gaps personally instead of building systems, held onto underperformers too long, and confused hard work with strategic growth.

The turning point came when he saw the real constraint. The ceiling of a business is defined by its model, not its operator. You cannot scale a business that depends on you. That insight reshaped everything. He became a business designer rather than just an operator, building systems and standards first, developing leadership early, and using real estate as a strategic asset instead of a cost.

Today Thomas helps growth-oriented owners who are thinking beyond one location and are willing to rethink the model itself. He built and expanded Alta Schoolhouse, launched additional locations, and now guides owners through the operator-to-designer transformation.
